Services

I offer a comprehensive and flexible editorial service, whether you would just like some initial feedback and advice or a full package that takes you from early draft to finished proofs ready to print or e-publish.

Each service takes place at a different stage of the writing and editing process, and I list them here in reverse order – so the task that usually takes place last appears first. Have a look at my ‘What is …?’ page to find out more about what happens at each of these stages, and see how they can benefit you.

  • Proofreading: You’re almost ready to print/e-publish

A thorough read-through of the finished (and, conventionally, typeset) text, to clean up any remaining errors and ensure a polished presentation. If you do nothing else, do this!

  • Copyediting: Your final draft is ready to be tidied up and prepared for typesetting/design

A detailed read of your final draft to weed out any errors and clarify where necessary. Your text will be marked up for typesetting/design at this stage too.

  • Line editing: Your plot flows, your characters are 'there' … now let's look at the words

A line-by-line close reading of your work, to make sure that your style and voice shine through and that your words, characters, narrative transform from marks on a page into 'story'.

  • Structural/developmental editing: You’re ready for a constructive critical friend, to look at plot, characterisation, flow, style …

A fresh pair of eyes to analyse your completed draft and ensure that it does what you want it to do. You may need to rework and rewrite at this stage, but it will help you interrogate your work, and be confident that it not only fulfils your goals, but shines.

  • Manuscript assessment and feedback: For a fresh perspective on your work and advice on next steps

Helps you find out whether and what level of work is necessary, prior to self-publishing or submission to agents/publishers.

  • Mentoring: For ongoing writing support and learning

To help new writers develop a sense of confidence in their work, through a process of helpful reading and feedback, with notes, discussions and workshops.

My standard Terms & Conditions are based on the model terms and conditions provided by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), adapted to suit each individual project after discussion and agreement with the client.
